Iowa State University

Addy Mueller

I am a third-year veterinary student at Iowa State University. I am currently pursuing small animal oriented medicine and hope to find myself working, and possibly owning my own, veterinary clinic down the line. This is a career that requires a high level of education and experiential learning in a variety of environments.

Through the Mentors Foundation, I was able to intern at the Capital Humane Society. During this time, I received hands-on experience in many aspects of the veterinary profession. Additionally, I was exposed to the inner workings and day-to-day routines of an animal shelter. Up until this time, I have worked with animals through a local veterinary clinic. Suffice to say, the two environments are very different and the experiences I had at each are paramount to my being the best professional I can be.

While I was with the shelter I was able to practice some skills that I had already learned in veterinary school. During the school year, it is hard to get out and do some of the more practical skills of the profession, and there is not as much time during our classes to get as much hands-on time with animals or medical procedures. The internship at the Capital Humane Society effectively bridged that gap, as I was able to do spay and neuter procedures under the supervision of the shelter veterinarian, become familiar with common diagnostic procedures, perform physicals, and administer preventative or therapeutic care. I also learned a great deal about working with professional colleagues, clients, volunteers, and even the media. These are skills that cannot be learned in a classroom setting and are key to success.

I would like to thank Mentors and the Capital Humane Society for the opportunity to practice and grow my skills. Further, I gained a greater understanding of the veterinary profession and of animals as a whole. I hope to take what I have learned and grow even more, so that I may become an even better practicing veterinarian in the future. As I complete my education, I know I am well equipped and prepared due to these experiences and I will be always be grateful for the time I spent with the shelter and the mentors who shared their time and expertise with me. Knowing the impact each one had on my journey, I look forward to mentoring others throughout my career.
